An important update from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

Truly shocking.

The White House apparently thought that the summary released today of President Trump’s call with Ukraine’s president would exonerate the president. They could not have been more wrong.

The summary plainly demonstrates Trump abusing his power by asking a foreign leader to go after a political rival, in a clear violation of his oath of office.

Read my New York Times op-ed for more about the implications of these new developments and why they are so disturbing.

We already knew there was more than enough cause to necessitate an impeachment inquiry into President Trump, from his campaign finance crimes to his obstruction of justice and constant corrupt self-enrichment, but this new allegation adds undeniable urgency. The transcript released today is stunning, but it fits Trump’s pattern of corrupt and anti-democratic behavior. This president tried to shut down the Mueller investigation, dangled pardons for associates to prevent cooperation with investigators, and was open to Russian offers of assistance in the 2016 campaign. We already knew that this president prioritized his own interests above the American people’s, and now we have another shocking example.

Tomorrow at 1 pm, a coalition of groups are holding a rally on Capitol Hill to call for Congress to act swiftly and thoroughly on impeachment hearings. If you’re able to attend, your presence can help send a powerful message in support of accountability for the president’s abuse of power. For more information and to RSVP, click here.

This is truly a perilous time for our democracy, and I’ll be frank—none of us know exactly what the coming weeks will bring. But we’ve gotten to the point of a formal impeachment inquiry thanks in part to public pressure from committed people like you. Thank you for speaking out and keeping up the fight for accountability. Here at CREW, we’re energized and ready to continue our work fighting to protect our democracy.

Thank you,
