Friend,

*Yesterday, Donald Trump became the first president in American history to be impeached twice.* After four years of demagoguery, utter incompetence, and racist rhetoric — culminating in the tragic yet predictable attacks of last Wednesday — this administration has exceeded even the worst expectations.

With calls to “move on” by Mr. Trump’s enablers in Congress and his right-wing media sycophants growing louder, I’ve been reflecting on my father’s experience as a prosecutor during the Nuremberg trials. When World War II ended, there was also a palpable sense that, after the bloody years of fighting and the millions of dead soldiers and civilians, the world needed to rebuild and move on. But the only way for healing to take place is with an accurate diagnosis of the underlying issues and holding those responsible for the heinous crimes to account.

Make no mistake, a line in the sand has been drawn. Now is one of those historical inflection points which will impact this nation for years and even generations to come, and our collective legacy will be determined by which side we as a society come down on. It’s not about revenge. It’s not about partisan politics. It’s not about Mr. Trump alone.

*This impeachment is about drawing the line and defending our country — both from this president, as well as from any future president following in Mr. Trump’s footsteps.*

This is precisely how we heal as a nation.

Tom
