Dear Friend,

It’s been just over a week since we watched in horror and disbelief as domestic terrorists stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt our democracy. These extremists, incited by the President, breached the Capitol as my colleagues and I stood poised to certify the election results and affirm the will of the people -- an act at the core of our democracy. I will admit that I am still shaken by what happened at the Capitol, and suspect I will be for some time and I’m so grateful for all the North Texans who have reached out offering your support and prayers.

For months, the President and his allies in Congress peddled disinformation and refused to accept the results of a legitimate election, culminating in the attack on our democracy we witnessed on January 6th and forever staining our country’s history.  President Trump must be held accountable for his dangerous and un-American actions.

That’s why yesterday, I joined my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in impeaching President Trump for inciting insurrection. The President’s actions and words put innocent American lives at risk each day he remains in office. He is a danger to this country and to democracy for generations to come. My vote to impeach came with heavy-hearted recognition that Trump's remaining in office is a threat to a government of, by, and for the people.

At the start of last week, Sunday, January 3rd, I renewed my oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. And as North Texas’ Representative, I will always put our shared values first and fight for our democracy. As a nation, we are now at a crossroads. Now that we have taken this critical step in holding the President accountable, may we choose unity, understanding and peace, and move toward a period of healing.

Sincerely,
