Hi team,

As we continue to reckon with the harrowing assault on the Capitol last week and navigate the course forward, it’s crucial that we discuss the role tech giants played in providing platforms that empowered extremists to recruit, radicalize, and plan these events. Social media companies have been negligent for years as disinformation, hate, and calls for violence have flourished; only after a deadly insurrection have they finally begun to push back. If you think it’s time Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter are held accountable, please sign our petition.

The siege didn’t materialize out of thin air. It was being planned online in plain sight by white supremacist and extremist groups. Whether companies like Facebook failed to identify this activity or simply chose not to act, they bear responsibility for their role in the tragic outcome.

At Accountable Tech, we’ve exposed and warned against the dangers of letting social media giants go unchecked. We’ve seen Facebook’s algorithms and groups spawn violence before -- from connecting white supremacists to fueling the tragic shootings in Kenosha.

It’s crucial to show these companies they cannot act with impunity. A critical portion of that is showing public momentum which is why we’re setting a goal of collecting 100,000 petition signatures today demanding Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter be held accountable for allowing insurrectionists to make plans openly on their platforms .
