Dear John:
When the House voted to impeach Donald Trump for the second time yesterday, most of NYC’s Congressional leaders did us proud. Led by NYC’s own Rep. Jerry Nadler (with Zabar’s babka and the Constitution in tow), our representatives, including newly sworn-in Reps. Jamaal Bowman, Mondaire Jones, and Ritchie Torres took aim at the white supremacy, violence, and lies spread by the President, his supporters, and some of their colleagues.
But one of NYC’s freshman representatives did the opposite. For months, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis has repeated the dangerous lie that the 2020 election results are fraudulent -- a lie that incited right-wing militants to storm the Capitol.
And on the night of January 6, even after violence that killed five people, Rep. Malliotakis was one of 147 Republicans who voted to overturn the election results.
Trump’s dangerous corrosion of our democracy did not come out of nowhere. Politicians who have enabled him to spread lies, hate, and incitement should be disqualified from representing the people of New York City in Congress.
Over the weekend, hundreds of New Yorkers gathered outside Rep. Malliotakis’ Bay Ridge office to peacefully protest her role in inciting the insurrectionist riot.
Fellow members of Congress Mondaire Jones, Jamaal Bowman, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have called for her resignation.
But despite the pressure, she has refused to accept responsibility. In an op-ed on Wednesday, Rep. Malliotakis responded to calls for her resignation by attacking the #BlackLivesMatter movement, continuing to push lies about the election, and proposing more voting restrictions (!!).
The truth is everyone who has enabled the violence that the Trump regime has inflicted on our Capitol, on our democracy, and on so many of our communities over the last four years should be held accountable.
Thank you so much,
