Friend, yesterday I voted to impeach Donald Trump for the second time.
Last week’s assault on the Capitol, which Donald Trump assembled and incited to undermine our democracy, was the most destructive attack on the foundation of our democracy.
The Senate must follow the bipartisan House impeachment vote with a speedy trial and conviction to remove Donald Trump from office. The Senate should also take the unprecedented step of banning Donald Trump from ever running for public office again.
Our government was founded on the principle that all power flows through the people. Donald Trump’s actions, in power and in defeat, have sought to subvert that power, and suppress the will of the people for personal gain.
In November, America rejected his platform, of white supremacy, of virulent racism, of inequality and unchecked greed. Now, on his way out, he’s decided to try to raze the very pillars of our democracy through violence and deceit.
We must not condone that. We must not acquiesce or step aside while Donald Trump’s lies inflame the hate and violence in the United States.
I voted to impeach, because there can be no unity without accountability, and impeachment is a critical step. We can and we will move forward safely to rebuild from the rubble of his disastrous presidency.
Thank you,
Peter
