After the attacks at the Capitol last week, Members of Congress and staffers will have to walk through metal detectors in order to get onto the floor of the House.

Many Republican members are claiming this is a political stunt even after armed rioters stormed the Capitol just days before. One right-wing Congresswoman, Lauren Boebert, even vowed to carry her Glock handgun around Capitol Hill. Another Congresswoman, Marjorie Taylor Greene, posted last year on her Facebook page a threatening image of herself holding a gun alongside images of the Squad.

So you can be sure that these metal detectors are not some political stunt, they are there to prevent tragedies and save lives. And yet, many Republican members of the House have refused to walk through the metal detectors to get onto the House floor.

If any member of Congress has a problem walking through a metal detector, they should have a conversation with America's students. Our young people have been forced to walk through metal detectors and practice active shooter drills because these very same lawmakers refuse to pass safer gun laws.

Look, here's the bottom line.

Walking through a metal detector will not take away anyone's freedom, and passing a background check will not take away from the right to bear arms.

These are commonsense actions that make us all safer and can prevent tragedies from taking place in our schools, houses of worship, or even the halls of Congress.

We are so close to passing universal background checks and taking the first step towards making our communities safer, so let's keep pushing forward, together.
