John,

Now that a new Congress has been sworn in, the possibility of $2,000 stimulus checks going out to the American people is back on the table.

So far, thanks to Mitch McConnell, hardworking Americans have gotten only $600 since the first stimulus passed in March -- an insult to all that the American people have suffered through in the past year. Millions of Americans are unemployed, small businesses are closing left and right, food insecurity is on the rise, and many across the country fear being evicted from their homes. But Mitch McConnell didn't care -- it was more important that he signal his opposition to the Democratic plan than to help the people of this country.

A $2,000 stimulus check would do a lot. As President-elect Joe Biden said: “Think about what it will mean to your lives. Putting food on the table. Paying rent. Paying down your mortgage. Paying down the credit card, paying the phone bill, the gas bill, the electric bill."

The pandemic has hit women hard. Mothers have had to leave their workplaces to care for children. Women-owned small businesses have shuttered. If we want to continue our progress towards equality, adequate pandemic relief is crucial -- but it won't happen if we sit passively and hope that a new Congress will bring change.
