The aftermath of the attack on the US Capitol is starting to feel a whole lot like domestic abuse. Between the “gaslighting”, to downplaying it to “a few bad apples” or “one bad day”, to calls for “healing and unity” and “moving on”, one could start thinking that maybe we’re blowing this out of proportion.
We’re not.
Those who brought us to this point by peddling the big lie of election fraud don’t get to demand healing. And those who incited an attack on the people’s house don’t get to call for unity.
Healing requires justice and unity requires accountability.
And it’s going to take all of us. We may have impeached the president, but white supremacy lives on in our “house”. We must expel the seditious members of Congress, we must intervene with our racist friends and family members, we must interrogate the parts of us that have internalized superiority/inferiority and we must build a culture of accountability that makes real healing and unity possible.
Stay awake…2021 is not playing.

An armed standoff? White male entitlement? Conspiracy theories? Sounds pretty American to me. Stop pretending this is not who we are. [[link removed]] [click to tweet] [[link removed]]

A lot of the white people who support Trump—and who support or at least sympathize with those who stormed the Capitol—are white people you know and love. On the soul of white folks. [[link removed]] [click to tweet] [[link removed]]
This week, we signed on with hundreds of other progressive organizations in demanding that Trump and those responsible for the attack on the US Capitol be impeached and expelled. Today, the House of Representatives impeached the president for the 2nd time on charges of inciting an insurrection (232-197 - the most bipartisan vote in history for an impeachment). Next up, the matter moves to the Senate, which will conduct a trial and decide whether to convict him. Why is it necessary to impeach and convict with only 7 days left in Trump’s term? Because once the individual is convicted (by two thirds vote), they can choose to remove, convict or disqualify him from future office. [[link removed]] So this week’s call to action is to call your Senators [[link removed]] and demand they convict and disqualify.
Dehumanization is the most significant driver of insurrection and it always starts with language. When the president uses language like “animals” or “aliens” or “dogs”, people internalize the valuation of human lives and violence and oppression follow. The events of January 6th is a perfect example of the consequences that stem directly from dehumanizing language. Words matter. The construct of dehumanization is a part of our origin story; how else could we have justified genocide or slavery or eugenics or kids in cages? Without accountability there can be no unity or change. We are all responsible for recognizing the language and culture of dehumanization, stopping it, and holding people accountable. Only then can we become the united state that we are yearning for. Brene Brown on words, actions, dehumanization and accountability. [[link removed]]
