Free and fair elections, followed by peaceful transfers of power, are the cornerstone of our democracy. But in the weeks leading up to and after the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many Republicans lied, promoted conspiracy theories, and tried to overturn lawful votes cast by the American people.

Donald Trump encouraged domestic terrorists to storm the Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the election and undermine the will of the voters. His actions threatened the safety of members of Congress and our staff.

But it wasn't just an attack on the people in the Capitol; it was an attack on our democracy.

Ten years earlier, almost to the day, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot and nearly killed by an assassin. A judge, a congressional staffer, and four others lost their lives. That too, was an assault on the foundations of our democracy.

Through resilience and determination, Gabby regained her strength and her voice. Her story gives me hope that our country can regain its strength as well

It starts with accountability. Law enforcement is engaged in a nationwide search and arresting those who committed acts of violence. And it was important for Congress to act too, to hold Donald Trump accountable for inciting a dangerous and violent insurrection.

Today, I voted to impeach Donald Trump. I took an oath to the Constitution to uphold our laws and protect our nation, and I will not waver.

Our democracy has been threatened, and we must defend it. This has been a sad and dangerous week, but together we must and we will move forward.

Thank you for standing with me,

Suzanne
