standuprepublic.com/ [standuprepublic.com/]Hi John,
Never in history has a President been impeached twice. But never in history has a President so deeply and so routinely betrayed our country. Trump’s latest assault on our democracy and Constitution didn’t involve a foreign power, as his last one did. This time, Donald Trump mobilized domestic terrorists in a desperate attack on Congress aimed at overthrowing the government and illegally retaining his power.
That attempted coup demanded that Congress respond in the strongest terms at its disposal, and with a bipartisan majority, they have now done so. Impeachment is a tool of last resort for the legislative branch, reserved for abuses that are intolerable to a free country. Trump’s willful assault on Congress and the country cannot be ignored, and he cannot be allowed to serve out the remainder of his term without consequence.
The President’s defenders have claimed that the process is rushed, and that Trump has very few days remaining in office. They are correct on both counts. But these conditions are a product of necessity, not of recklessness. Where the Trump caucus errs is in thinking that they can hide behind process to mask their craven defense of a corrupt, dangerous and treasonous President. Failed tyranny is no less odious to liberty than successful tyranny.
We now know who in the House of Representatives is beyond hope, and who, even if grudgingly, has stood up in defense of our country. That only 10 Republicans were able to put their country above their politics to support impeachment is a stunning condemnation of the current House Republican caucus. Senate Republicans have a chance now to distinguish themselves and show true leadership by voting to convict. Anything less would be a betrayal of their oath and an abandonment of the Constitution and country they have sworn to defend.
No matter our party, we must be united in defense of our country and the peaceful transition of power that lies at the heart of our freedom. That is our patriotic duty. We applaud those Members of Congress who did so today. But defending our democracy doesn’t end here today. It must carry on with conviction in the Senate, the successful transition to the Biden Administration, and an enduring commitment to strengthening the ideals, norms and institutions of our Republic.
