BY NATALIE SCHREYER | Early Wednesday morning, the U.S. government executed Lisa Montgomery after a number of legal efforts failed to outlast a Trump administration that was determined to put a lifelong victim of torture and severe mental illness to death. She was the first woman to be executed by the federal government since 1953, and the 11th execution since the Trump administration reinstated the use of capital punishment after a 17-year suspension.
