Last week was a whirlwind. We witnessed an incredibly inspirational affirmation of our democracy, followed by an unprecedented attack on it.
While we condemn the latter, we also want to make sure to celebrate the former. The vote tallies are still being finalized, but the big picture is clear: Georgia voters turned out in droves to make their voices heard, sending Senators-elect Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff to the United States Senate, and in the process flipping control of the chamber, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris poised to cast the tiebreaking vote.
Voter turnout in runoff elections has historically lagged far behind general elections. Not this time. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of activists and organizers in Georgia and around the country, 4.5 million ballots were cast, approaching the turnout we saw in November.
In addition to the 1.5 million letters that Vote Forward volunteers wrote to Georgia for the general election, you wrote 2.6 million letters in just a few weeks to encourage your fellow citizens to register, request absentee ballots, and vote in the runoff.
