After Capitol attack, repudiations & reactions

After last week's events at the Capitol, many of us are still reeling.
Citizens' Climate Lobby condemns the violent attack, and we have been
glad to see repudiations—both of the attack itself and the misleading
rhetoric that fostered it—come out from across the political spectrum.
Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger said to his Republican colleagues,
"We must reject the charades and tell the truth. Joe Biden won the
presidential election." Democrats like Senator Chris Coons are calling
for accountability, which will "show our allies, adversaries, and the
world that democracy will weather this test."

Volunteers themselves have been sharing a wide range of reactions and
emotions in our Community forums, on calls, and in emails to staff.
Here's a sampling of what we're hearing from you:

"The millions of Americans who have been traumatized by what they have
seen will need to rally and rescue your democracy." - From an
international CCL supporter

"Luckily, we have already met with my congressman, because I could not
stomach him right now." - From a volunteer represented by a member of
Congress who voted not to certify the election

"While we were certainly shocked and upset, I think it really instilled
in us a greater sense of purpose." - From a CCL group leader

Executive Director Mark Reynolds says, "Let's be clear that our
democracy itself seemed to hang in the balance last week. I share the
anger and disappointment that many of you are feeling. And I meant what
I wrote last week

—if you are unable to engage with your member of Congress on climate
solutions, that's okay. We trust you to make the right decision for
you."

As an organization, we remain committed to continuing our work in
Congress. We invite you to continue sharing your thoughts and reactions
in the CCL Community forums.

of our January national call with Dr. Noah Kaufman, lead author of the
2019 Columbia University assessment of the Energy Innovation and Carbon
Dividend Act. Consider watching the recording together with others on
Zoom and discuss the economic and environmental effectiveness of carbon
fee and dividend afterwards.

If you have more time: Join next week's webinar with meteorologist Eric
Sorensen

from WQAD in Moline, IL. He'll talk about how broadcast meteorology has
become a vehicle for teaching the public about climate change. The
webinar, hosted by CCL's Meteorologist Outreach Action Team, is at 8
p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on January 19.

We surpassed our year-end funding goal!

As you may already know, we surpassed our bold year-end fundraising goal
of $1 million by 12%! Support from this campaign will allow us to
strengthen and scale our grassroots capacity in the year to come,
ensuring that every member of Congress knows that Americans are ready
for bipartisan climate solutions.

Many of you stretched your personal giving to make this fundraiser
successful — thank you for your vital donations, as well as everything
else you give to this cause! We continue to be awe-struck by your
generosity and energized by your commitment to building political will
for a healthy climate. Now let's make 2021 a game-changing year for the
climate!

Grasstops engagement: Penn State resolution

Back in December, the State College and Susquehanna Valley chapters in
Pennsylvania got a huge endorsement when the University Park
Undergraduate Association at Penn State passed a resolution supporting
the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, the first such resolution
passed at an institution of higher learning. Volunteer Cathy Cullen
relates the story in this Community post

from CCL's National Resolutions Project Coordinator Sandy Simon. The two
chapters presented the resolution in a meeting with the office of 12th
District Congressman Fred Keller.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the " five levers

about how to pull the grasstops engagement lever like these volunteers
did, watch or read this training on engaging city and local governments
for resolutions.
