John,
Today, I voted to impeach President Donald Trump for the second time. This was a decision that I had no doubt reflected the will of my constituents.
From my office in D.C., I can see the Capitol. And last Wednesday, I could only watch in horror as insurrectionists breached the People's House. Trump must be held accountable for his crimes and for instigating the violent insurrection that led to a domestic terrorist attack.
Trump and his allies in Congress deliberately spread lies to voters about the results of the November election. As elected officials, we have the responsibility to speak the truth -- to be honest and forthright with the public and with ourselves.
Trump failed to speak the truth. He lied again and again for his own political salvation, and in doing so, he failed the American people. If Congress doesn't hold Trump accountable, we will set a dangerous precedent for years to come. That is why I voted for impeachment today, because the sanctity of our democracy and the future of our Republic depend on there being accountability.
I was elected to defend the Constitution without fear or favor, as was every other official in Congress. As your representatives, we have an obligation to also hold the Legislative Branch accountable. The Republican lawmakers who supported and repeated Trump's dangerous lies in the months leading up to the attack must also be dealt the full force of the law. Their attempts to circumvent the election process can't be overlooked or forgotten.
Our democracy is precious. It is vulnerable. I will fight for that more perfect union and to hold Trump -- and everyone who took part in or encouraged the attack -- accountable.
Thank you,
Dwight
