Last
Wednesday was horrific and deeply traumatic.
Ayanna — as a Black woman in Congress who has been fighting for racial,
economic, and social justice for all — has faced a constant stream of
hatred and threats against her, her family, and her staff. Then last
Wednesday, Donald Trump’s supporters made good on those threats — staging
a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol that put the lives of everyone on the
Capitol grounds in danger.
Since then, deeply troubling details about the attack and the law
enforcement response have started to emerge. Sarah Groh, Ayanna’s chief of
staff, told the Boston Globe that when she went looking for the panic
buttons in the Congresswoman’s office, she saw that every one had been
torn out — the whole unit.
Some Republicans are calling on us to simply ‘move on’ from what happened
Wednesday in the name of “unity.” But there can be no unity without
accountability.
Make no mistake: the violent attack was incited by Donald Trump and
members of Congress who peddled false and dangerous conspiracy theories.
Donald Trump is a grave danger to our country, to our democracy, and he
must be held accountable for his actions. By impeaching and removing
Donald Trump, we have the chance to protect our country and be intentional
about preventing him from ever running for federal office again.
The members of Congress who supported and helped spread Donald Trump’s
dangerous lies, like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, should immediately resign.
If they do not resign, they should be expelled.
Ayanna is co-leading articles of impeachment against the President,
co-sponsored Rep. Cori Bush’s legislation to expel members of Congress who
set the stage for this insurrection, and she was the first member of
Congress to call for an investigation into the attacks and how the
insurrectionists were able to gain entry to the capitol.
Let us be clear: we are stronger and more powerful than the white
supremacists and extremists who attempted to overthrow our democracy. We
will not bow to fear. We will ensure accountability. The future of our
country belongs to us.
We won’t heal from Wednesday’s attack overnight, and eradicating the
hatred, racism, and white supremacy that brought us to this moment won’t
be easy. But if hatred, discrimination, and racism can be codified and
amplified, then so too can justice, healing, and accountability.

employees, and everyone impacted by Wednesday’s events.
