I’ve taken the past few days to pause and reflect on the disturbing events that took place here in the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday, and where we go from here.

Make no mistake: what we witnessed was a violent insurrection and attempted coup by QAnon supporters, Proud Boys and other white nationalists and right-wing hate groups, fueled by the dangerous words and conspiracy theories of President Trump and his sycophants in Congress who continue to falsely insist that the presidential election was stolen from him.

The Capitol was breached and ransacked for the first time in American history since the British did so more 200 years ago in 1814. Many of my colleagues and our staff were forced to evacuate, wear gas masks and even hide in the gallery of the House floor as Capitol Police barricaded the doors with furniture and had guns drawn in fear the mob would storm the chamber. Six lives were lost, including two Capitol Police officers.

Our democracy came under siege, and those responsible for this treacherous and seditious behavior must be held accountable. It starts with Trump.

Today, I joined House Democrats in introducing a resolution to impeach President Donald J. Trump for inciting insurrection.

Though there may only be nine days left in his presidency, it’s beyond clear: Trump should be impeached, convicted and removed from office immediately to prevent further harm to our country.

Though these insurrectionists tried to stop us, we finished the job we started: Joe Biden will be the next President of the United States come January 20th.

But the current occupant of the White House remains a clear and present danger to our country. That’s why it’s imperative that Democrats and Republicans come together now for the good of our democracy and end this nightmare once and for all.
