Team,
I believe we have a duty to look at all of the facts and use them to guide our actions. And I believe that we will look back at this moment and remember whether we spoke out or remained silent.
I've spent time reviewing the facts, reflecting on my duty as your Senator to uphold the law, and I've come to a decision: The House should begin impeachment proceedings.
I support the beginning of these proceedings, because it's a matter of national security and protecting our Constitution and the rule of law.
We must open a process to lay out the facts, as we continue to learn of reports that the President asked - or pressured - Ukraine to interfere in our country's democracy, specifically by undermining a political opponent.
This impeachment inquiry is serious -- and different from removal from office. In our system of checks and balances, an impeachment inquiry is the only way we are able to establish whether a President has abused their power and put their own interests ahead of the security of our nation and the rule of law.
As your Senator, my job is to uphold the Constitution and rule of law. And that means fulfilling my responsibility to listen to all of the evidence before making a final judgment.
I’m speaking out, because I believe it is my duty to you and our democracy.
Thank you,
Senator Tina Smith
