Today is a somber day in our nation’s history, friend.
When I was chosen to represent the people of Arizona’s First Congressional District, I never thought I would have to cast a vote to protect our very democracy.
But last week, our own president incited a riot that put the lives of countless public servants in danger and took the lives of five Americans, including a law enforcement officer. Anything less than full accountability would be a betrayal of justice and our nation’s founding principles.
Friend, I don’t take this vote lightly.
I was a police officer and a criminal investigator for many years. I spent my career gathering evidence and pursuing truth and justice. Not only did the president’s actions endanger the lives of hundreds of law enforcement officers, they instigated a direct attack on our democracy and the rule of law.
I want to move forward from this as much as anyone. There are big problems facing our nation, and we’re going to need to work together to solve them.
But we cannot overlook a violent attack against our nation’s government. I’m voting today to impeach the president, so that tomorrow we may get back to the important work of delivering new COVID aid to struggling families and working across the aisle to preserve our democracy.
