Almost a year after the Democratic Party won the House of Representatives back, Nancy Pelosi and the House leadership have finally decided to move forward with impeachment proceedings.
It has been a long time coming, and we’re proud to have helped build the movement that compelled Pelosi to proceed despite her unwillingness. Especially given that we’ve witnessed some of the most abject and obscenely violent actions by an American president in modern history.
Donald Trump built concentration camps for children, separated parents from their children, and stuffed immigrants from Latin America into ‘iceboxes’ to such a density that the DHS Inspector General warned of the imminent threat of the outbreak of disease. But Trump wasn’t impeached for that.
Donald Trump vetoed a bill sent to his desk to end the genocidal war against Yemen being waged by Saudi Arabia with the active aid and facilitation of the United States. But Trump wasn’t impeached for that.
And Donald Trump signed into law the biggest tax scam giveaway to billionaires in the history of the United States, while inciting violence against the immigrants who power our economy. But he wasn’t impeached for that.
We welcome impeachment, but we have to be clear that the process has taken too long and the scope is too small. As we have written, the strongest ground for impeachment is the president’s consistent efforts to enrich himself at taxpayer expense.
Make no mistake: Donald Trump contacting the president of Ukraine to try to win an election is a crime. But winning that fight won’t get us any closer to getting fair rents for tenants across the country (with whom we showed solidarity in yesterday’s march on Veritas Investments), or fixing the climate crisis (which we’ve been engaging by supporting climate strike actions over the past week).
So I’m going to ask you now to chip in to help us fight the corporate leadership of the Democratic Party. We’ve proven that we can push Pelosi to embrace even issues she previously refused to consider. We’ll keep pressing until we’ve established housing, healthcare, and food as human rights, and nationalized the weapons manufacturers and fossil fuel extraction industries that profit from death & destruction.
