John,
Today, I am calling on the House of Representatives to begin a formal impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump.
President Trump himself admitted that, while on a phone call with the President of Ukraine, he sought damaging information about his possible future opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, while at the same time he was withholding $250 million worth of U.S. military aid for Ukraine as a bargaining chip.
By any reasonable standard, these actions are out of step with our laws and our values, and I believe they warrant an impeachment inquiry.
The Trump Administration has repeatedly refused to comply with Congressional subpoenas, meaning the only way we can truly move forward with this critically important investigation is by opening an impeachment inquiry.
Because of these and other disturbing developments, I believe that it’s now up to Congress to act under our constitutional authority and begin an impeachment inquiry because the American people deserve answers about President Trump’s abuse of power and potentially illegal actions.
I didn’t come to this decision lightly—but defending our democracy and our nation’s values against this reckless President’s actions has never been more essential than it is now.
