John,

This summer was yet another reminder of the urgent need for action on gun violence: 26 mass shootings left 126 people dead.

All across the Commonwealth, we are waking up to news of injuries or lives lost due to gun violence. In Philadelphia, there were at least 19 shootings throughout one weekend in June, in which five people were shot and killed, and 28 were wounded. And just a few days after the violent weekend, 10 people were injured in a shooting at a nightclub in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Now more than ever, we cannot afford to sit idly by. That's why Governor Tom Wolf signed an executive order to make sweeping changes to reduce gun violence as both a public safety crisis and public health crisis. The executive order includes initiatives and reforms to address domestic violence, suicide, accidental shootings, mass shootings, and community gun violence.

But executive action will not fix this crisis alone. The legislature must act to hold a vote on commonsense gun safety legislation measures such as state-level universal background checks on gun purchases and an Extreme Risk Protection Order Bill that would allow a judge to temporarily restrict someone from owning a gun if evidence shows they pose a violent risk — either to themselves or others.

Thanks for taking action on this,

John
