John --
There's a lot happening in Washington, so I wanted to take a moment and update you directly on where things stand.
Tonight, Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats will move forward with a vote calling on Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Donald Trump from office. If he refuses to do so, we will vote on articles of impeachment against Donald Trump for inciting an insurrection.
I'm asking you to join Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate working to remove President Trump as a way of defending our democracy. Please add your name here.
As you know, this is not a decision that I have come to lightly.
It is unlikely that Vice President Pence will invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump, as most Republicans have already demonstrated they are unwilling to hold him accountable.
It’s disturbing that even after inciting a violent riot in the United States Capitol that resulted in the deaths of five Americans, GOP leadership continues to enable and excuse his actions.
In fact, many of my Republican colleagues question whether this is the right thing to do “politically” with his term close to ending soon -- somehow insinuating that it could harm President Biden's ability to get work done with the Republicans in the long run.
We need to take
very seriously what happened last week, and I’d consider it malpractice to hold our breath over the next eight days and hope Trump doesn't do something like this again.
I will support the effort by House Democrats to impeach President Trump on the charges that he knowingly incited an insurrection. He's a threat to the stability of our democracy, and he must be removed from office immediately. Not next week, but right now.
Join me urging my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the House and Senate to support the efforts to remove President Trump from office.
More soon,
Mike
