Friends,

Responsibility for last Wednesday’s violence, vandalism, and loss of life rests squarely on President Trump. He is an imminent danger to our nation, and he has proven himself unfit for office.

As such, we must invoke the powers of our Constitution and remove him from office, even as his term comes to an end. Doing nothing would otherwise condone the dangerous riot and lies he helped fuel that gave rise to the insurrection.

I am joining my colleagues and co-sponsoring a resolution to impeach President Trump for inciting an insurrection against the U.S. government.

The facts are clear: President Trump has refused to acknowledge the results of the free and fair election that took place last year, an election won decisively by President-elect Biden. For weeks, he has made his supporters believe that the election was stolen, and that Members of Congress have the power to unilaterally overturn the election results. This thoroughly-debunked conspiracy has undermined our democracy and led directly to the violence we saw last week. An angry mob stormed the Capitol, breached the People’s House, and temporarily suspended the operation of our federal government because they believed the President’s lies. All while he did nothing to stop the violence as our government was temporarily taken over.

In this moment of crisis, it is incumbent upon Congress to stand up for our Constitution and our democracy. We cannot wait -- we must act quickly to fulfill our duty to the American people.

I do not take this lightly. It breaks my heart that we have come to this point -- where the President of the United States threatens the very democracy he’s meant to lead.

But that’s exactly where we are, and we must act accordingly. I promise that I will act with the urgency this crisis demands and will always keep the best interest of the American people at heart.

Right now, that means impeaching Donald Trump.
