In Annual Poll, Nurses Ranked Most Ethical … Again
Asked to rate the honesty and ethics of 15 occupational groups, Americans once more put nurses at the top, rating them even higher this year than in the past. “Nurses remain the undisputed leader, as they have been for nearly two decades,” reports Gallup in its summary of the 2020 poll.
The first in a series of online forums devoted to nursing and health equity focuses on ways to diversify nursing’s ranks. The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action and AARP’s Multicultural Leadership host the virtual sessions that will bring together consumer, business, health care organizations, social justice, and other community groups in the coming months.
This was the Year of the Nurse and Midwife that no one expected: a pandemic that has changed us all forever. We roll back time to January 1, 2020, to find out what have been the most-read posts from the Campaign blog since. Not a surprise: Almost all focus on the nursing workforce and COVID-19.
Accurately forecasting supply and demand in the nursing workforce is critical to America’s health. Yet projections made by the Health Resources and Services Administration in 2014 and 2017 showed unexpected and surprising changes, partly because of widely differing measurement models. A paper in Nursing Economic$ examines the differences and calls for a Nursing Masterfile.
Policy Brief Urges Actions To Build Trust in Vaccines
Based on “a woeful history of maltreatment,” communities of color and tribal communities—both populations that have been hit especially hard by COVID-19—are also among those most hesitant to get the vaccines. In late 2020, Trust for America’s Health, the National Medical Association, and UnidosUS created recommendations for policy actions to earn trust within these communities to encourage greater use of the vaccine.
These Heroes Wear Scrubs: Marvel Comics Celebrates Nurses
Yes, nurses are heroes, and now Marvel Comic, with Allegheny Health Network, gives nurses “real-life superhero treatment.” “The Vitals,” a comic book that is serious about honoring nurses, transforms nurses and their heroics into characters that spring to comic-book life. Says one nurse: “We don’t think of ourselves as heroes, but it’s a good feeling to be recognized as one.”
Nursing Background Helps Her Lead, Says UCLA Health President
Johnese Spisso, RN, MPA, says her nursing background shapes her understanding of leadership. And lead she does: Now CEO of the UCLA Hospital System, president of UCLA Health, and associate vice chancellor of UCLA Health Sciences, she started her career as a staff nurse. She tells HealthLeaders why she focuses on diversity, equity and inclusion in her leadership roles.
Now’s the time to get involved: AARP and the Nurses on Boards Coalition seek nurses to represent AARP on community boards working to improve patient care, support family caregivers, build healthier communities and advocate for policies that lead to better health and well-being.
