We demand to know why a mob of white nationalists was able to enter our Capitol building, why photos are emerging of police officers — who vowed to protect our country’s leaders — taking selfies with insurrectionists, and why so many walked away free after participating in violent actions.
That’s why Cori is supporting Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s new bill, the COUP Act, to create a commission to investigate and intercept police misconduct and incompetence on Capitol Hill.
Let’s make this clear: We can’t have unity without accountability.
Biased policing, like we saw last week, has long been an unjust and dangerous norm that has led to the marking of innocent people as threats, and white supremacists as harmless. This ends now.
Simply firing the heads of the Capitol police won't be enough. If we want true accountability, we need a detailed investigation and meaningful action to redeem trust in our security measures, and a commission to investigate the attack and ties between white supremacists and Capitol Police.
