John,
There must be consequences for those who encouraged last Wednesday’s insurrection. The attack on our Capitol and our democracy cannot be allowed to stand.
Just days ago, I swore an oath just days ago to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic” as I began my second term. That is not a responsibility I take lightly.
The insurrectionists’ failed coup was a seditious attack on this country — incited by Donald Trump directly.
Five people died as a result of this attack, and we have heard reports of more would-be insurrectionists inspired by the president’s rhetoric planning further attacks.
Yes, Donald Trump’s term is almost over, but it is clear that he is a danger to our country and our democracy.
The mood at the Capitol has been somber in the days since the attack. It is unfortunate it has come to this during what should have been a peaceful transfer of power, but I know we must take this path forward for our democracy.
That is why I called on Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. It would be the fastest way to end this clear and present threat to our nation.
I also support impeaching President Trump and disqualifying him from holding office again — because he is a danger to the democratic values we hold close as a country.
We cannot be silent in this moment. My promise to you is to continue speaking truth to power — no matter the political consequences.
Thank you for standing by us in this difficult moment. I pray that we can heal and safely move forward a stronger, more united nation.
