I have called on the President to resign, but it’s clear he has no intentions of letting the country heal by stepping aside.

John,

Last Wednesday, the President of the United States incited an attack on our Capitol. Members of Congress had to duck under bulletproof chairs and staffers barricaded doors. It was an insurrection intended to stop the certification of Joe Biden as President, inspired by the President’s lie that the election was stolen and his calls to supporters to “fight hard” and “stop” the certification.

I have called on the President to resign, but it’s clear he has no intentions of letting the country heal by stepping aside.

This is a Constitutional emergency, and I am joining a bipartisan group of lawmakers, including Pennsylvania Republican Senator Pat Toomey, in calling for President Trump to be removed. Preferably, by the process outlined in the 25th Amendment, but I will vote for impeachment if necessary.

No President should be able to use their power to attack our democracy, John. Congress will ensure the peaceful transition of power continues and Joe Biden is sworn in on January 20th.

Yours,
Matt Cartwright
