As our world changes, so do our stories — and how we tell them.

Dear Friend,

I usually set out each year in January to document our work around the
world through photography. But by mid-March of 2020, while on assignment
in Indonesia, my trip was cut short by the growing COVID‑19 pandemic, and
I returned to the U.S.

Travel restrictions over the past year have meant that dedicated local
team members in many of the 40+ countries where we serve — plus a host of
talented freelance photographers — played a crucial role in telling the
story of our work and the millions of people it supports.

I am delighted to include their inspiring work in our [ [link removed] ]top photos of
2020.

COVID‑19 has altered nearly every aspect of our lives, what we do and how
we do it. The field of photography is no exception. Two themes really
strike me about [ [link removed] ]this year’s photos: how quickly we are able to adapt
and innovate and how interconnected we all are.

Our efforts have never been more crucial, nor our obstacles more
formidable. Through all the challenges, Mercy Corps teams were still able
to reach nearly 37 million people in more than 40 countries with our
programs — an incredible accomplishment that reinforces how proud I am to
work here.

I hope
you also feel proud to be an essential part of our global community. Just
by looking at photos like these or reading the stories of people whose
lives our work has helped, you bring us all closer to a more connected
world.

To a new year of possibility,

Ezra Millstein
Senior Global Photographer, Mercy Corps
