Dear John,  350 Milwaukee's January meeting is tonight!

“Take a deep breath, and then take a second deep breath. One of those two breaths was made by diatoms,” said Andrew Bramburger, a lake ecologist now with Environment and Climate Change Canada...

Everyone calls the Amazon rainforest the lungs of the world, But it’s actually the diatoms in the oceans, rivers, and lakes of the world that make about half the oxygen in our atmosphere.”
- from Tim Folger's December 2020 National Geographic article

Zoom Virtual Meeting

Our guest speaker, author
Tim Folger
will speak on

Saving the Great Lakes and
the Implications of Climate Change

Followed by Q&A

Tim Folger's feature article for the December 2020 National Geographic focuses on the Great Lakes and Tim's assignment was to write about the Great Lakes.  The 50th anniversary of the 1969 Cuyahoga River fire (when an oil slick floating on the river burned) was approaching and the magazine wanted to look at the changes during the intervening time.

"The feature story of the magazine’s December 2020 issue puts a spotlight on the Great Lakes. It’s a comprehensive piece that delves into the issues plaguing the lakes and the impact those are having on the people whose lives are deeply entwined with those lakes. That includes scientists who base their life’s work around studying these waters, traditional Anishinaabe trappers, and officials in cities along the shorelines.

The story serves a dual purpose. On one hand, it looks back on key events in the Great Lakes watershed that influenced environmental awareness around the nation like the Cuyahoga River fire. At the same time, it explores issues that people around the world can see reflected in their own environments and communities."

Zoom Virtual Meeting

Topic: Wisconsin Fair Maps
Speaker: Matt Rothschild

After each Census (i.e. 2020) the state's congressional and senate districts (both federal and state) are redrawn based on the census population numbers so that each district includes the same number of residents - equal representation.  2021 is the year those district boundaries will be redrawn.

"Partisan gerrymandering is a practice that attempts to establish a political advantage for a particular party or group by manipulating geographic boundaries to create partisan or incumbent-protected districts." - Fair Maps Coalition
