Dear Ward 8 Residents,

We turned the corner into 2021. After such a turbulent year, I am sure we are all grateful to have made it around that corner.

A new year means new beginnings and a fresh start. We must allow ourselves to view challenges and opportunities with a fresh lens towards the future and embrace what possibilities it will hold.

Never underestimate the power you have to take your life in a new direction. This year, I encourage residents to do some goal setting. I challenge you to make a list and write down 10 goals you’d like to achieve this year and strategically work to get them accomplished. Our minds are so powerful. Put action into your thoughts. Push yourself towards success and do not allow the challenges life throws at you to stifle your growth.

You can do it! I can’t wait to watch it all unfold. Happy New Year Ward 8. It is a pleasure to continue to serve you.

On January 2, The Council of the District of Columbia conducted the Swearing-in Ceremonies for newly elected and re-elected officials. Councilmember Trayon White was ceremoniously sworn in for a 2nd four-year term as Ward 8 Councilmember.

Chief Contee Lauds MPD’s Role in Defending Capitol During Attack ()

Acting D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Contee III on Friday explained his department’s actions during this week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol to a social media audience invited by D.C. Council member Trayon White Friday.

Contee made it clear to the 300 people who viewed his 15-minute conversation with White that MPD officers were requested to go to the Capitol to quell the violence.

“We were invited by the leaders of the Capitol Police department,” he said. “We were asked to support the Capitol Police department. They have a very large force that protects the U.S. Capitol. It is larger than the Prince George’s County and Montgomery County police forces. We are charged with protecting D.C.”

Trayon White, Washington, D.C., Councilmember, Ward 8

Trayon White was born, raised, and educated in Southeast D.C. In November, he was elected for his second term as a council member of Ward 8, an area of the nation’s capital that, according to 2018 United States Census ([link removed]) reports, has a median property value about less than half of the rest of the city, a median income roughly 60% less than the total median for D.C., and is 89% Black. In a town filled with transplants and people moving in without regard for its rich culture and history, the native Washingtonian’s voice and outlook are welcome in Ward 8 and across D.C. as a whole. Giving back to his hometown has always been a focus for White. The D.C. Council’s website ([link removed]) shares how White would travel back to D.C. weekly to coach football at the Boys & Girls Club while enrolled at HBCU ([link removed]) University of Maryland Eastern Shore, his involvement
with several youth organizations focused in Southeast, and his award for volunteerism from President Barack Obama ([link removed]) . If his first term was about foundation setting, his next term will most likely be different. In an interview with DCist, he wrote, “In my first term, I have laid the groundwork and developed community-based assets for addressing problems all while bringing more resources to Ward 8 than any previous holder of this office…My approach has not been perfect, as nothing is, and I have learned a lot that will guide my efforts moving forward. However, my record of success is undeniable.”
