Founded in 2013, KAHAL is a study-abroad organization dedicated to strengthening the community of Jewish college students who want to expand their prospects by studying overseas. Before the pandemic struck, the nonprofit felt it was well positioned for the future, describing itself as “the premier organization for Jewish study abroad students around the world, helping thousands immerse themselves in Jewish life in 57 countries and 127 cities.”
When COVID-19 spread to Europe and North America in March, and overseas travel was interrupted, KAHAL faced critical decisions like many other nonprofits. We spoke with Executive Director Alex Jakubowski to find out how the organization adapted and transformed.

In Case You Missed It...
Fixing the Academic Paradox
Just as Donald Trump routinely claims that mainstream Democrats are actually socialists or even communists, it has become a cliché to assert that many social science professors are dangerous radicals. Even New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof has suggested that it is easier to find Marxists in some social science disciplines than Republicans.
The truth, however, is that while many social scientists and historians lean towards the Democratic Party, very few of them do more than vote or sometimes contribute to electoral campaigns. The number of academics who are serious allies of movements for social, racial, or environmental justice is pitifully small.
