2021 has been a rollercoaster already. But we are looking forward and I want to share the latest updates on what campaigns the US team is prioritizing in the new political context, as well as an upcoming event we’re supporting again this year, Transit Equity Day. This is a long email―I am hoping it will start to fill the need many of you have expressed for a better understanding of 350.org US’s work over the next year and how your group can plug in, if you choose.
These campaigns are designed to help us continue to realize our 350.org US purpose to fight for a just and equitable world by stopping the fossil industry from continuing to destroy our climate. We do this by building a powerful multiracial movement to confront and isolate the fossil fuel industry, opening up the political space for transformative climate action.
Our 2021 campaigns:
1. LAUNCHED Build Back Fossil Free
Over the next 4 years, it is our responsibility to hold the Biden Administration to their climate justice rhetoric, and push them further on policy. While the recent election results in Georgia mean that we are far more likely to be able to move climate legislation through Congress, that will take time, negotiation and will certainly face opposition. In the meantime, we can triage the fossil fuel industry’s impact on people’s health, safety and our climate by pushing the Biden administration to take executive actions. These executive actions can begin on Day One.
We must to ensure that climate is a priority (not to edge out other important work for justice―we like the idea of a blitz), and that Biden doesn’t settle for least common denominator actions like rejoining Paris, but truly leads as if climate is an existential issue. That means passing dozens of executive actions, from ending fossil fuel permits on public lands, to establishing a climate test for federally permitted infrastructure, to strengthening environmental justice rules within the EPA, to establishing free, prior and informed consent for federal actions that impact the lives and livelihoods of Indigenous peoples. You can see the full Build Back Fossil Free (BBFF) blueprint here. We are working with a robust, intersectional, and justice-focused coalition to realize these goals. And thanks in part to our Cabinet Climate Test, we have strong allies like Rep. Deb Haaland in Biden's cabinet to place inside pressure on the president to keep it in the ground.
Want to get involved? Your group can formally sign on to the coalition here. You can find social media promotion materials here. And we have a day of action coming up soon on January 19!
January 19 day of action:
· This day of action is really just a first step to highlight the BBFF blueprint, so the asks are mainly around publicity:
· Take a photo with a banner in an iconic location in your area (for example, a popular landmark or iconic skyline), post it online and submit it to the coalition to be used in a petition delivery in the first 100 days (more details in the toolkit).
· Share the Build Back Fossil Free petition with your network. You can create a unique link to the petition and receive the contacts you drive to the petition using the instructions in the toolkit.
· Tweet out your support for the BBFF executive action blueprint.
· Join a digital rally lifting up fossil fuel fights from around the country.
· You can find the Build Back Fossil Free day of action toolkit here.
· You can watch the organizing call led by IEN on Thursday here.
Following the day of action, we’ll be pushing hard on a few executive action priorities like rejecting the Line 3 pipeline and rescinding the Keystone XL pipeline permit, instituting a climate test for new fossil fuel infrastructure, and pressuring the Attorney General to investigate and hold fossil fuel executives accountable. We will follow up shortly to collaborate on an organizing plan for the first 100 days of the Biden administration.

2. COMING SPRING 2021: US Central Bank aka the Federal Reserve (still in search of a snappy campaign name)
Preparing to launch this spring in coordination with regional leads across the globe and the Stop the Money Pipeline efforts we will work to ensure that federal money meant to support the American economy amidst the Covid-19 crisis does not go to companies who are driving the climate crisis, including the fossil fuel industry or other high-polluting sectors. In addition, we will demand that the Fed use its oversight capacities to rein in fossil fuel financing by the banks and financial institutions.
Ultimately, we will know we have won when the Fed has intervened to help shape a more resilient, sustainable and fair economy, and provide the leadership and funds needed for a Just Recovery based on a Green New Deal.
3. COMING LATE 2021: Make Polluters Pay
Later this year, we are working hard to launch a new decentralized movement project that is aimed at holding the fossil fuel industry accountable and demanding they pay for the harm and climate destruction they're responsible for via climate reparations. This will build off the decade long work of Divestment and our campaigning on #Exxonknew. This is not public yet! More information will be coming your way in the months ahead and we look forward to collaborating with local 350 groups on this.
Transit Equity Days, Feb. 3-4
This year Transit Equity Day will be two days, Feb. 3 and 4, and include community hearings on transit equity on both days as well as a day of action on Feb. 4, Rosa Parks’ birthday. This yearly event is led by the Labor Network for Sustainability and cosponsored by 350.org. We hope your group will get on board! More info and all the resources you need:
