It’s been an unprecedented week in Washington. And it is clear the divisions in our country run deep. Yet, during this uncertain time, it is important to remember that our country and our citizens are resilient. And our fundamental values and principles that we share as Americans remain strong.

While many newly elected and re-elected members of the new Congress came to Washington vowing they will protect and strengthen our nation’s social insurance programs, some will ultimately cave into massive pressure exacted by so-called fiscal hawks, corporate special interests and Wall Street brokers who want to downsize the government’s obligations to Social Security and Medicare.
It is why the National Committee has waged and won battles to defeat threats to earned benefits since 1982 — among both Republican- and Democratic-led Administrations and Congresses. No matter who leads our government, oftentimes the lure of touching Social Security and Medicare remains too strong to ignore.
