After months of dragging her feet, Nancy Pelosi finally declared that the House of Representatives will be opening an official impeachment inquiry.

Some of us might feel relieved. Maybe there’s some hope in sight? So much of what the Trump administration has done in just over two years flies in the face of our basic values as a country. This caricature of a villainous President has kept so many of us awake at night, dreading what he’ll do next.

As much as we want to be relieved, we must accept -- this is only the beginning. Impeachment can take months, even years. This process will no doubt cause further divisions that break across party lines, but the American people deserve to know the truth.

We have another election cycle drawing near. We not only need a new President, we need a Congress that will stand up against corruption, pass legislation that matters and is not afraid to do its job. We need a Congress full of Representatives who refuse to put party over people and shirk their duties to gain political points with the most blatantly lawless administration in American history.

Contribute today. We need to fight to seat a Congress that will uphold the tenets of human rights and democracy! And we MUST win more progressive seats in 2020.

Democrats shouldn’t be the only members of Congress calling for impeachment, but Republicans would rather defend and protect a President who sides with dictators, locks children in cages, openly lies to the public and leads crowds to cheer for representatives of color to “go back.” Republicans will remain silent as long as he supports legislation that benefits their corporate buddies. At this point we can’t blame it on complacency, this is compliance.

Executive overreach and blind party loyalty isn’t anything new. But it’s time it became a thing of the past.
