The National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights denounces plans for Trump to descend on Alamo, Texas tomorrow, Tuesday, January 12, and we demand that the trip be cancelled. Trump supporters plan to meet him there, and given Trump's incitement of violence and his attempted coup just days ago, this publicity stunt can pose a real threat to the local community, especially to immigrants who bear the brunt of white supremacist vitriol and direct attacks. Even as plans for the trip proceed, the FBI is investigating reported plans for more armed protests at the U.S. Capitol and at all state capitals leading up to Inauguration Day. This border trip is clearly an attempt to divert attention from likely impeachment proceedings and widespread rebuke of the violence and coup attempt in Washington last week. Trump and his cronies are being stifled on social media and this trip provides Trump with one of his favorite activities: the whipping up of hate against people of color and migrant communities. Reportedly, the visit will focus on the border wall, a focus and symbol of Trump's cruel and destructive policies —from family separations and the treatment of children, to increased militarization and surveillance, to construction of a border wall that is desecrating sacred lands and costing billions in contracts, even while the US has no ownership of those lands. All of this while Covid continues to devastate families, taking over 375,000 lives to date, a fact of apparently little concern to this Administration.
