True the Vote Court Battle for Voters' Rights
UPDATE: Countersuit Filed - True the Vote v. Fair Fight Action
-
There have been few weeks more pivotal in election integrity than what
our country experienced last week. Now, as we face a wave of progressive
interests aimed at silencing citizens' voices and removing our ability
to petition the government, this update takes on a level of importance
that cannot be overstated.
For weeks, the True the Vote team was on the ground in Georgia working
hard to provide training, election integrity hotline support, and most
significantly, assisting Georgia voters across the state in the filing
of over 364,000 Elector Challenges to individuals who did not appear to
meet residency requirements.
The election came and went - but the fight did not end there.
In fact, our efforts to defend citizens' rights continue, because what
started in Georgia is now part of a lawsuit that asks a very important
question for every voter in America
**-** do we have rights? And should those rights be protected from
intimidation?
On Christmas Eve, Stacey Abrams's group, Fair Fight Action, sued True
the Vote and Georgia voters across the state who petitioned their
counties in the interest of protecting the right to vote. They sought to
restrain us in the filing of citizen challenges and prevent us from
future work in the state.
Their attempt to silence American citizens failed. We won
**-**but the fight is far from over.
Today, True the Vote filed a countersuit
in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, asking
the court to stop Fair Fight Action from continuing its effort to
intimidate Georgia voters who lawfully submitted elector challenges in
their counties prior to the January 5th election.
Fair Fight Action's suit took direct aim at our constitutional rights.
If their suit had succeeded, it would have violated the principle of a
citizen's right to petition the government and the right to freedom of
speech.
Fair Fight Action attacked True the Vote and these courageous citizens,
not for breaking the law, but for following it! Georgia law explicitly
allows for challenges to voter eligibility if evidence suggests
challenged voters no longer live at the address where they are
registered.
We cannot and will not let this assault on voters' rights go unanswered.
LEARN MORE
Today's countersuit not only asks the court to safeguard Georgia
citizens' rights and True the Vote from Fair Fight Action's
strong-arm tactics, but it establishes our stand against the progressive
onslaught to silence the American people. We will not stand by and watch
while our rights are taken. For over a decade, True the Vote has worked
to preserve voters' rights and election integrity. We're not
stopping now.
The attacks on the rights of citizens and states will not stop. We
won't either; stand with us.
Ever onward,
Catherine Engelbrecht
