John -
Last Wednesday, Donald Trump incited white nationalists who staged a violent and coordinated coup attempt on the United States Capitol.
We demand the impeachment of Donald Trump and the expulsion of his enablers in Congress. But we will not allow these Trump-inspired insurrectionists to keep us from recognizing the work of grassroots organizers or distract us from our work ahead.
Organizing works. Black volunteers in Georgia put in countless hours to lay the groundwork to turn out voters. As a direct result of their efforts, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff will be the next United States Senators from Georgia.
John, the only way we will dismantle the fossil fuel industry is by creating an unprecedented, multi-racial and multi-generational movement, the likes of which has never been seen in the history of this country or this planet.
So I am writing to you today with a very important question:
We have a clear path to achieve many of the policies we’ve fought for over the last decade — including a ban on fracking, a climate test for fossil fuel projects, and more. But it won’t be easy.
Unlike any other organization or political campaign, 350.org is not just up against one single opponent. No. We are up against the entire fossil fuel industry, the financial institutions who bankroll them, and the politicians who prop up their disastrous projects. We are up against systems of white supremacy and environmental racism that profit off of the exploitation of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color.
But make no mistake about it. Our brightest days and our biggest victories are yet to come.
While our opponents may have unlimited sums of money, we have the power of people:
Together, we are dismantling the extractive systems perpetuating racism, anti-Blackness, and white supremacy. Climate justice is racial justice.
Together, we are going to demand the Biden Administration take bold climate action. That begins with stopping the Keystone XL, Dakota Access, and Line 3 pipelines on day one of Biden's presidency.
Together, we will stop the money flow from financial institutions to fossil fuel projects.
Together, we hold fossil fuel polluters accountable for the damages they have caused our communities.
But let me be very clear: no one person can take on the government, big banks, and the fossil fuel industry alone.
We only have one chance to turn things around for our climate and our planet — and that is together:
The climate crisis is immense, John. But if we continue to stand together, there is no fight we cannot win.
Thank you for signing up today.
In solidarity,
Emily Southard
