I know the last thing you probably want to do right now is reflect back on 2020. Please humor me for just a moment.

I won’t remind you how tough and challenging the past 10 months have been. You already know that.

Instead, let me tell you about the animals whose lives will be forever changed because you chose to support The Humane League. A newborn chick is hatching today, who—thanks to you—will be spared a lifetime of suffering in a battery cage. Elsewhere, a chicken who would otherwise face the prospect of being boiled alive will no longer risk such a terrifying end. And fewer animals will endure the trauma of factory farms and slaughterhouses altogether as more people choose kinder, animal-free meals.

Every year our collective impact for animals has grown. The strides we took together in 2020 will save more than 350 million individual animals [[link removed]] from some of the most extreme cruelty— every year . While this sounds impressive (and, it is!), the reality is that billions of animals are still suffering in the most deplorable conditions.

As I write this, animals in factory farms across the nation are systematically denied everything that makes their lives meaningful. Cages still confine animals in spaces barely bigger than their bodies. And there are no federal laws to prevent extreme cruelty in slaughterhouses.

So in 2021, we’re setting our sights even higher.

This year, we have a plan [[link removed]] to reach even more animals in need. We will pressure key retailers, restaurants, and hotels in the US and around the world to eliminate the worst and most widespread abuses of chickens (who represent 9 in every 10 land animals killed for food). To the companies that have committed to end these atrocities: We will hold them to their promises. And we will force industry heavyweights to reckon with the reality that if they fail to address animal abuse, we will come for them.

This won’t be easy. We’re taking on huge corporations that have budgets magnitudes larger than our own. We’re fighting against unjust laws, and a status quo that sees farm animals as objects rather than the living, thinking beings that they are.

I know we can do this—and not just because we’ve achieved “the impossible” before. I know we can do this because we have something these wealthy corporations don’t: you.

You are part of an astonishing movement. Together, we represent a collective of compassion and selflessness that is more powerful than all the corporate profits in the world. The truth is, you don’t have to spend time each week taking online actions [[link removed]] for animals. But thousands of caring people like you do just that. You don’t have to donate a cent of your hard-earned money to help the most abused animals in our society. But it’s precisely because of the generosity of caring people like you [[link removed]] that we’re able to defend animals every day.

Not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for your support. All this is to say…

Thank you for fighting with us on behalf of the world’s most abused animals.

You’re the reason we’ve set our sights high in 2021. Thank you for believing in us. And thank you for everything you do for animals.

In the spirit of looking ahead, I am wishing you a sincerely happy new year—one filled with hope, potential, and the promise of a kinder and more just world for all.

For the animals,

David Coman-Hidy
President

P.S. This year we’re ramping up our efforts to dismantle the industries that profit from the confinement and abuse of animals. Your support is making this possible—thank you!
