Team,

Many of you reached out regarding the photo that was captured of me clearing debris from the Capitol Rotunda after the riots. The Rotunda is one of my favorite rooms in the Capitol. It symbolizes the heart of this country and our democracy, and when you see something you love that’s broken you want to fix it. That’s what we need to do now for this country we love.

While I don’t have all the right words or know all the next steps, there are a few important actions that we need to take right away:

1. We must immediately remove the President from office. On January 6th, we saw the President of the United States incite an insurrection and an attack against our Capitol. He is a dangerous man who has broken his oath to this country, and he is unfit for office.

2. We must protect against the threat of further violence, and investigate the attacks of last week. On Wednesday, we lost control of the United States Capitol. Now, we face continued threats to our national security. It is imperative that we focus on protecting against further violence, and getting to the bottom of what happened last week.

3. Congress must pass laws to help heal our divides. We must take legislative action to bridge the deep racial and ideological chasms in this country, and rein in the radicalization of white supremacists and the proliferation of disinformation.

4. We must change the way Americans treat one another. No single law can heal the depth of our divisions. We need to recognize that we can only get through this by seeing the humanity in each other. It is imperative that we come together – not just as Democrats and Republicans, but as Americans – to stand up for the health of our democracy and sanctity of our Constitution.
