The United States spends more money on defense, security, and the military
than any nation in the world. In the wake of last week’s attack, we must
ask how a mob of insurrectionists was able to breach our Capitol building
with such ease.

Alexandria is signing on to Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s new bill the COUP Act,
which calls for a national commission to investigate the attack and the

Given the gravity of last week’s events, we can’t shy away from the tough
questions. We must ask:

* How does a group of violent rioters march into Congress so easily?
* Why were some officers seen taking selfies with rioters who were
trespassing on Capitol grounds?
* What role did racial bias play in the police response to this attack?
* What were the links between white supremacist rioters and Capitol
Police?

We cannot move on from last week’s events without accountability —
including a full investigation into security failures. We’re calling for a
commission to get to the bottom of what happened and how it happened:
