John,
The events at the U.S. Capitol last week have brought issues of government surveillance and the power and responsibility of Big Tech to the forefront of our national conversation.
I wanted to share this piece that I wrote warning of the dangers if lawmakers respond to this crisis of white supremacist violence by expanding surveillance programs, creating a new domestic terrorism designation, increasing policing, or gutting Section 230—actions that would harm the communities who are already most impacted by Trump’s policies and rhetoric.

We can't stop fascism with authoritarianism. The weaponized white supremacy, patriarchy, and economic injustice that led to this eruption of violence cannot be stopped by cracking down on dissent, criminalizing freedom of expression, or militarizing police. In order to defend our democracy we need to tackle this problem at its root: systemic racism and injustice.
We can’t allow politicians to exploit this moment of national crisis to rush through another PATRIOT Act.
We have work to do.
