Friend --

What we as a nation witnessed on January 6 was nothing short of a failed coup and an act of sedition fueled by white nationalism.

The violence we witnessed follows years of President Trump embracing both the rhetoric of white supremacy and white supremacists themselves from his position as president -- and long before he even held office. Many of these attackers wore Nazi memorabilia and fascist slogans as they ransacked the Capitol grounds. Others raised the Confederate flag -- a symbol of enslavement -- for the first time in the Capitol in our nation’s history. Unsurprisingly, when called upon to de-escalate the situation, Trump instead embraced this mob in a recorded address and said he “loved” them “very much.”

But, this attack on our country is indicative of a bigger problem at the heart of American politics. It’s a culmination of centuries of racist and cynical politics and policies designed to enshrine white privilege and power for centuries more to come.

Look at the way Black- and Indigenous-led coalitions have been met with violence throughout historic and peaceful protests as opposed to the scenes of Capitol Police politely escorting the white mob down the steps of the Capitol they just ransacked.

If we do not hold Trump accountable right now it will be another devastating blow to our democracy.

Trump must be immediately removed from office and brought to justice.

You can take action right now by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to connect with your members of Congress and demand that Trump be impeached or that they show their support for his removal by the cabinet invoking the 25th Amendment.

Listen -- though our democracy faced one of its darkest days last week, I still have faith that people working together towards a more just and equitable future will always be greater than the challenges we face. The mob did not succeed in stopping democracy -- they may have delayed it, but Joe Biden’s victory was still certified.

PeopleGreater will be back very soon with more ways to get involved in the fights ahead. Until then, stay safe, be well, and rest as you need. We have hard, necessary work ahead of us.

In solidarity --
