Week of January 11th, 2020
|
The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real— it's surging to record levels in Los Angeles, the US, and the world.
We need to be extra vigilant and mitigate the risks of infection, particularly for those who are older or who have pre-existing conditions. For the sake of our collective health, please remember to wear a mask when you leave your home, practice social distancing, and wash your hands frequently. This pandemic has shown us that the health of one is the health of all so we all need to take responsibility for our common well-being.
There are some easy ways to safely stay connected to the chapter, such as: signing-up on the front page of our website to receive our weekly newsletter, checking the calendar on the site for upcoming virtual events, and joining DSA-LA’s Slack.
In solidarity,
DSA-LA

Help Change Lobbying Laws In Los Angeles This Week!
|
Hate NIMBY neighborhood associations having too much power in city hall? Now’s your chance to do something about it!
Lobbying laws have not been significantly updated in the city of Los Angeles since 1994! This has allowed all sorts of special interests to lobby city hall under the radar and get things passed before the public even finds out it is happening. The LA City Ethics Commission is taking public comments online now and in three meetings this week on whether or not they should re-send their recommendations to Nury Martinez to be voted on. Normally only the lobbyists show up at these meetings but this time, they’re going to have some company from us. Be sure to make public comment NOW via email or the LA City Ethics website and again TOMORROW, TUESDAY, JAN 12, WEDNESDAY JAN 13, and THURSDAY, JAN 14. A full explanation is in the linked toolkit with all the websites, email address’, dates and phone numbers you need to put an end to lobbyists unregulated access to city hall.

Donate To Elect DSA-LA Members To Neighborhood Councils!
|
DSA-LA's Neighborhood Council Project seeks to create collective power within the Neighborhood Council system to hold City Council accountable to the demands of the working class. The 99 Neighborhood Councils serve as an advisory board to the city, but most current Neighborhood Council representatives advocate for policies that hurt the working class, unhoused individuals, and people of color. This project intends to change that and to create a city that is capable of meeting the needs of every community.
Your donation will be used to purchase flyers, door hangers, and social media ads to win Neighborhood Council seats across the city. With as little as $5, you can help us reach 25 voters!
If you would like to donate to a specific candidate, please submit their name and Neighborhood Council. Otherwise, funds will be distributed equitably according to need.

The following list is only a highlight of what's happening this week with DSA-LA. Please check out our online calendar for full list of committee meetings & chapter events! Be sure to also follow our Instagram & Twitter for real-time announcements and calls-to-action!
