Friend,

Big tech’s purge of conservative accounts including President Trump’s should be extremely worrying for everyone – regardless of political affiliation. It is an extreme escalation in big tech’s desire to control your thoughts and opinions.
In addition to Facebook and Twitter banning conservative accounts, Google and Apple removed the social media alternative to Twitter (Parler) from their services. That means that simply opting out is no longer an option.

If you’re a business owner trying to reach your customers online but hold any “controversial opinion,” like abortion is wrong – then good luck – you too could be permanently banned from their services. Companies like Google have banned ads from search platforms because owners held conservative opinions. And with Apple and Google controlling nearly 100% of mobile operating systems in the United States, there is simply nowhere else for those excommunicated to go. Big Tech will force you out of business for not agreeing with their politics.

The hypocrisy is stunning. While companies like Twitter continue to defend allowing the account of the leading sponsor of terrorism in the world – the ayatollah of Iran – to post its justification of genocide, it has taken the unprecedented step of banning the President of the United States. Just this week China was allowed to post justifying the forced internment and sterilization of Uyghur women. One reporter reached out to Twitter to confirm the post did not violate their policies.

This is obviously a serious problem that Congress must address NOW. The Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution to ensure that government would protect your right to free speech. Big tech can’t be allowed to determine whose free speech is allowed in the public square.

We cannot allow our largest tech companies to target us for holding opinions that a majority of us in this nation hold.

Sincerely,

Rep. Ron Estes
