Friend,
I want to take this moment to thank my loyal and faithful volunteers and supporters: my “Day Ones” as my daughter would call them. You saw representation in me: a deep understanding of intersectionality and a lived experience of the economic divide in this City that meant that we, the people forgotten, might finally get to be at the table. For believing in me - and this vision that is bigger than us, I thank you from the deepest spaces of my heart and soul. I’ve always known that we deserved a campaign that reflected our boroughs and our communities, both in terms of substance and leadership. I dreamed of building a squad of women of color who would lead this historic campaign and have transformational impact in this City.
I’m proud to say we are manifesting that team.
Two extraordinary leaders - Ifeoma Ike and Whitney Hu - recently joined our campaign as Senior Advisor and Interim Campaign Manager, respectively. They have both served in New York City government and run for office here. They understand that we must stand with our communities at every stage of the race, no matter the outcome. They are but two members of the inclusive team I have always envisioned for this campaign.
But building an equitable team also means being accountable when your team does not align with your vision or community. Over time, some of our team members have exhibited cultural and gender insensitivity to our volunteers, to our staff, and if I’m honest, even to me. Recently, one of our staffers sent a series of emails that do not reflect the core values of our team, our campaign, or me as a person. Without causing further harm, the reality is that politics and campaigns are still dominated by white men. The majority of campaigns excuse racist, ableist, and sexist aggressions in the interest of political expediency. I can not. That staffer is no longer on our team.
To those of you who were brave enough to bring this to my attention -- thank you. To those of you who were personally offended, impacted or harmed, please accept my deepest apologies on behalf of the campaign. We will continue to foster an environment of trust and create accountability measures in the spirit of transformative justice.
That said, I appreciate your patience, grace, and accountability. The campaign is evolving and we’re experiencing amazing triumphs led by women of color, while also enduring the realities of the dominant culture we all share. I look forward to a day when candidates like me can exist in spaces where our vision and whole selves can thrive unencumbered.
Today is a new day, and my team and I are choosing to build toward that future. I hope you’ll join us.
P’alante, in solidarity,
Dianne Morales
