Dear friend,
This week, we watched in horror as a mob of insurrectionists, intent on attacking our democracy, breached the US Capitol. What makes it more outrageous is that they were riled up and incited by elected officials sworn to serve our country — including and especially the President himself.
Five individuals lost their lives, including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who was murdered by the riotous mob. I’m heartbroken for Officer Sicknick’s family and for our nation. Please pray for them.
Despite the horror and grief of this past week, we have reason to hope — hope that under a new President who appeals to our better angels rather than our worst impulses — our nation can begin to heal.
If history is to be any guide, before there can be reconciliation, there must be truth and accountability. We've see this lesson play out time and time again. In fact, it’s a lesson that we failed to properly learn after our own Civil War 156 years ago. That’s why I was appalled, yet remarkably unsurprised, to see a photo of a rioter carrying a Confederate flag in the capitol.
Every single person who participated in this insurrection must be brought to justice. And every single public official who fanned the flames of riot and insurrection and then continued to perpetuate the lie that this election was fraudulent, even after people were murdered, must answer for their complicity. They are not fit for public office.
I urge you to contact Congress and demand that each of these perpetrators be held accountable. Find your congressperson here: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative
There is a hateful fire burning in our country and even after we douse the smouldering embers, there will be much to be done to renew and replenish our civic identity. But let’s begin by reaffirming our belief in the truth, in democracy, and in the very idea of America. Let’s remember what it was like to believe in each other.
The path forward from here will not be easy, but it’s one that we can and will forge together.
With hope and resolve,
Andrew
