The Equal Rights Amendment -- the amendment that finally, once and for all would guarantee equal rights to everyone and freedom from legal discrimination based on sex -- was first introduced in 1923. But today, 96 years later, it still hasn’t been ratified. Even here in Virginia, we’ve failed to take the action necessary to pass this amendment.

It’s a pretty simple concept: men, women, and people of all genders should always have equal rights, and discrimination against someone based on their sex should always be illegal.

Earlier this year, the Virginia General Assembly had the opportunity to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment -- but it didn’t receive enough votes to pass. This is unacceptable: add your name to stand with Mayor Levar Stoney and demand that the Virginia General Assembly make strides towards gender equality and pass the Equal Rights Amendment NOW.

It may seem absurd that in 2019, here in the United States of America, there is no constitutional guarantee that women should be able to live a life free of gender-based discrimination.

It is wrong, and it’s on us to take action now to fix it.

Virginia is one of just 13 states that still haven’t ratified the amendment. It is completely inconsistent with the values of our commonwealth that we’ve refused to take a bold stance to support women by passing this bill.

Mayor Stoney is committed to supporting gender equality in Richmond, but it’s time that our entire state follows his lead by ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment. Add your name if you agree that the Virginia General Assembly should support Virginians of all genders and pass the amendment.
