The New York Times broke the news on Thursday that President Trump is strongly considering a self-pardon in the coming days.
This is a five-alarm fire. Trump knows he’s on the hook for four years of corruption, fraud, and obstruction -- not to mention responsibility for inciting an armed insurrection at the U.S. Capitol -- and once he leaves office this month, he could face legal jeopardy. But trying to weasel out of it could cause a constitutional crisis.
According to the Times, “a presidential self-pardon could create a dangerous new precedent for presidents to unilaterally declare they are above the law and to insulate themselves from being held accountable for any crimes they committed in office.”
