Hello John,

"The Anishinaabe have fished, hunted, and trapped there for centuries, and after Borg shot the moose, ...

But as he dressed the carcass—cutting it up to bring home—Borg’s gratitude gave way to revulsion. When he tried to extract the liver, which should have been firm and meaty, it deliquesced into a bloody sludge, sliding goopily through his fingers."
- Tim Folger, National Geographic, December 2020

The story of Tom Morriseau Borg, who is an Anishinaabe trapper, is part of the story of the environment, the Great Lakes, Climate Change, and life. Join us Tuesday to hear Tim Folger's story of exploration and learning for his National Geographic article.

If you get a chance, read the article before the meeting - $12 for a one year digital subscription ([link removed]) .

350 Milwaukee's "2nd Tuesday" meetings are an open forum - everyone is invited and anyone can drop in. Please forward this invitation to your climate/environment mailing list and your friends.

Our guest, author
Tim Folger
will speak on

Saving the Great Lakes and
the Implications of Climate Change

Followed by Q&A

Tim Folger's feature article for the December 2020 National Geographic focuses on the Great Lakes and Tim's assignment was to write about the Great Lakes. The 50th anniversary of the 1969 Cuyahoga River fire ([link removed]) (when an oil slick floating on the river burned) was approaching and the magazine wanted to look at the changes during the intervening time.
"The feature story of the magazine’s December 2020 issue ([link removed]) puts a spotlight on the Great Lakes. It’s a comprehensive piece that delves into the issues plaguing the lakes and the impact those are having on the people whose lives are deeply entwined with those lakes. That includes scientists who base their life’s work around studying these waters, traditional Anishinaabe trappers, and officials in cities along the shorelines.

The story serves a dual purpose. On one hand, it looks back on key events in the Great Lakes watershed that influenced environmental awareness around the nation like the Cuyahoga River fire. At the same time, it explores issues that people around the world can see reflected in their own environments and communities."

Tuesday, February 9, 7 - 8:30pm
Zoom Virtual Meeting

Topic: Wisconsin Fair Maps
Speaker: Matt Rothschild

After each Census (i.e. 2020) the state's congressional and senate districts (both federal and state) are redrawn based on the census population numbers so that each district includes the same number of residents - equal representation. 2021 is the year those district boundaries will be redrawn.

"Partisan gerrymandering is a practice that attempts to establish a political advantage for a particular party or group by manipulating geographic boundaries to create partisan or incumbent-protected districts." - Fair Maps Coalition
